Procedures for Searching Students

Once a reasonable suspicion justifying a search has been established, the following general guidelines should be followed.

For ease of reading, the student will be referred to in the masculine gender; however, these procedures apply equally to female and male students.

A. Remove Student to a Private Area

  • Personally escort the student to be searched directly to the office or other private location.

  • Maintain visible contact with the student from the time he is retrieved from the classroom or other school area, to the time he reaches the search location to ensure he does not abandon contraband or evidence.

  • At least two staff members should escort the student as a precaution against the student fleeing or resisting school officials.

  • Stops along the way to the search location should not be permitted.
