Student Searches by Law Enforcement Officers (cont.)

Except for searches for weapons, law enforcement officers
will need probable cause to conduct a search of:

If a law enforcement officer has been summoned to a school
to assist school officials in an investigation (not related to suspected
weapons) and a student search is warranted based on the school official’s
reasonable suspicion, it is recommended that school officials -- not the
officer – initiate, conduct and witness the search.

The officer can stand by as a non-participant until the
search is completed.
