Program Name: School Resource Officer

Program Description: The Elwood Police
Department is in the process of developing a School
Resource Officer Program
for the express purpose of being proactive rather
than reactive dealing
with youth crime and violence in the school system.
The officer will be
based in the school 75% of time and will be available for
counseling and as a
liaison between school personnel and particularly
troubled children.

Program Name: DARE Program
Contact: Officer Scott Harmon
Program Description: DARE Program consists of
educating Kindergarten through Fifth Grade
students the effects of
drugs, alcohol, tobacco and violence within there
lives. The education consists of building
self-esteem and life skills that may
be lacking at home and
or in schools. Officer Harmon also
teaches drug and
alcohol awareness in the
High School, but not part of the DARE program.
This lesson is part of
the health teachers curriculum. The DARE
Program has
been offered for 10 years at the fifth grade
level, however Officer Harmon
has been teaching it for
the last three years from the K-5 level.
Teaching the
health classes is in
it's third year.

Program Name: Think Straight / A
violence prevention program for 6th grade

Program
Description: The
Think Straight program is taught over a period of six weekly classroom
sessions. The main objective of the program is to
promote a non-violent
approach to problems
faced by our youth. The four topics are
bullying &
teasing, conflict
resolution, healthy relationships and gang violence &
prevention.
Instructional methods will include interactive activities, role-
playing, video
presentations and guest lecturers. On
the 5th session, the
students will be broken
up into small groups, each group will research an
assigned topic relating
to one of the four topics presented by the instructors.
The sixth and final session will consist of
group presentations pertaining to
assigned topics.
