A joint effort by the Bureau of Justice Statistics and National Center for Education Statistics, this annual report examines crime occurring in school as well as on the way to and from school. It provides the most current detailed statistical information to inform the Nation on the nature of crime in schools.This report presents data on crime at school from the perspectives of students, teachers, principals, and the general population from an array of sources--the National Crime Victimization Survey, the School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the School Survey on Crime and Safety and the School and Staffing Survey. Data on crime away from school are also presented to place school crime in the context of crime in the larger society.

9/19/2006     National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement
The National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement was established in December 2005 with funding from the September 11th Children's Fund and the National Philanthropic Trust. The Center is located at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Goals of the Center The Center was created to: Promote an appreciation of the role schools can serve to support students, staff and families at times of crisis and loss Enhance the training of individuals in school-related professional education programs in the areas of crisis and loss Link efforts to provide trauma-related and bereavement support services within school settings Collaborate with professional organizations, governmental and non-governmental agencies and community groups to further help students, staff and families at times of crisis and loss Serve as a resource for information, training materials, consultation and technical assistance for school systems, professional training programs, professional organizations, governmental and non-governmental agencies, communities, children's groups and projects in the areas of crisis and loss

12/16/2005     Gang Resistance Education And Training (G.R.E.A.T.)
The Office of Justice Program's Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) has announced a competitive solicitation for the FY 2006 Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Program. Grants under this program will assist local law enforcement agencies in delivering the G.R.E.A.T. program in their communities. G.R.E.A.T. is a school-based gang prevention program taught by law enforcement officers to elementary and middle school youth. There are also family and summer components available to participating law enforcement agencies, which provide opportunities to partner with community and faith-based organizations. An evaluation of the program administered by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) found that the program has increased participants’ negative view of gangs, reduced levels of victimization among participating youth, improved their attitudes toward law enforcement, and lowered risk-seeking behaviors. Currently, hundreds of local and federal law enforcement agencies around the U.S. are implementing the G.R.E.A.T. program in their communities, as a part of a comprehensive gang deterrence strategy.The application period opened December 13, 2005. All G.R.E.A.T. grant applications are due on or before 8:00 p.m. EST on February 2, 2006. Agencies can apply for grants up to $250,000 to implement the G.R.E.A.T. Program in local schools.

The G.R.E.A.T. Program is a school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed classroom curriculum. The program's primary objective is prevention and is intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership.

The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program is a nationwide, cooperative statistical effort of more than 17,000 city, university and college, county, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement agencies voluntarily reporting data on crimes brought to their attention. During 2004, law enforcement agencies active in the UCR Program represented 94.2 percent of the total population.

What are schools doing to prevent delinquency and promote school safety? This NIJ Research in Brief (NCJ 205005) presents findings from a national survey of elementary, middle, and secondary schools. Problem behavior is widespread and most common in urban areas and middle schools. Schools have adopted a large and diverse array of activities, curricular programs, and security measures, but many of these are unproven or poorly implemented.
